2020 ECCAO Board of Directors Nominees:

Suzanne Mohamed
I am a mother of two amazing teenagers, ages 17 and 14. I work in language teaching and assessment. I immigrated to Canada 11 years ago. It has been a great journey so far with all the ups and downs. I have enjoyed every single step and milestone, and looking forward to what’s coming.
I joined ECCAO two years ago on a camping trip. On the trip, I met many new wonderful friends who had just arrived in Canada. I was surprised that the first thing they did was to join an Egyptian social group and start going to events. It took me almost ten years to be active socially beyond my close circle of friends as I was always busy with school, work, and family. Joining ECCAO and expanding my social circle had a great impact on me and made my life in Canada more enjoyable.
It such a wonderful and heathy thing to be connected to the community. The sense of belonging to a larger community creates a sense of purpose which brings happiness and joy to our lives, not only for us as adults but also for our younger generations. My main contribution to ECCAO this year if I am elected to be on the board will be to reach out to many newcomers and include them in our big family, and to participate in organizing events that would bring all of us together.

Tasneem Abbass
Dear community members, my name is Tasneem Abbass and I am currently serving as the secretary for ECCAO as a part of the 2019-2020 Board of Directors. I am a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa holding an Honours BSc. in Translational and Molecular Medicine (Extended French Stream) and am a current first year student at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto.
I am very excited to be a nominee for the 2020-2021 Board of Directors! Since having immigrated to Canada at a young age in 2000, my family and I have been very active members in ECCAO. For the last 20 years, ECCAO has played a pivotal role in shaping my Egyptian-Canadian identity. I have a deep connection to my roots and have adopted my Egyptian culture in my everyday life here in Canada. ECCAO has allowed me to expand my network and get to know so many of our members on a personal level.
Throughout my time with ECCAO, I have gained valuable experience in event planning and execution, cultural promotion, youth involvement, and so much more. If elected onto the new Board of Directors, I plan on applying my knowledge and skills while continuously learning. As one of the youngest members and nominees to be on the Board of Directors, I hope to continue to bring a fresh spin on classic events and increase youth engagement within the community.
I look forward to continuing to serve ECCAO and the Egyptian-Canadian community at large and hope that you will consider me for the 2020-2021 Board of Directors.

Amany Alhadka
I’m a Senior Operations Executive who worked in a number of national and international Non for Profit Organizations in Egypt and Canada including Misr Elkhair (MEK) Foundation in Egypt, CARE USA, CARE Canada, Equality Fund, Canada’s only global fund for women and most recently, Prospera the International Network of Women’s Fund. I also work as an independent consultant with Spring Strategies among other organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America to strengthening the organizational capacity, systems and processes. I came to Canada in 2013 with my husband and two boys and since then, we’re trying to embrace the Canadian Culture while maintaining our Egyptian identity. I believe in the power of people and communities to make a lasting impact through mobilizing resources, engaging in dialogue; promoting diversity and communicating through culture, arts and social activities. Active citizenship requires engaging in community and promoting good deeds to demonstrate a role model of how to enrich and strengthen the culture and the social fabric of Canada. This is what encouraged me to join ECCAO in 2017 and jump on two important committees; the Education Committee and Embrace Egypt Festival that was part of Canada 150 Celebration through Ottawa Welcomes the World event. Since then, I became an active member of ECCAO and has been on the Board of Directors for two consecutive years holding the position of Secretary in 2018 and Vice President in 2019. I’m also one of the Hosts with Voice of Egypt TV show on Rogers TV-Community Channel 22. I’m proud of many contributions I’ve made over the past two years at ECCAO including adding the mentorship and career support program, diversify and add more fun elements to some of our signature events. Outside of ECCAO and my day job, I’m a mentor and a guest speaker with different entities and at different platforms including McGill Women in Leadership Student Association, Carleton’s Master of Philanthropy and Leadership, Hire Immigrants Ottawa, LinkedIn and many more. I also support Syrian Refugees through working with organizations that provide settlement and integration services and I’m part of a private sponsorship group who sponsored two families sine 2016 to date. I brings many years of organizational development, business transformation, community services and operations management that are needed to strengthen the institutional capacity of ECCAO. I have very ambitious goals and plans for 2020. If elected to serve on ECCAO Board of Directors for 2020 my focus will be on 1)- To ensure a sustainable institutional performance of ECCAO; 2) To increase its visibility and outreach to become THE place where every Egyptian in Ottawa go to for fun, network and support; 3)- To put ECCAO on the map for strategic partnerships with associations and businesses who are looking for opportunities to increase their own outreach and marketing; and 4)- To be known for excellent event organizations, diversity and welcoming everyone in Ottawa regardless of their nationality or identity to join our events.
